Short answer

Electric cars are becoming more and more common in North Macedonia - the Tesla, ID3, MG4, BYD, Hyundai Ioniq and similar have been a regular sight on our streets for a few years now. With that, the need for home chargers is growing too. Because public chargers are limited and often busy, installing one at home is hard to avoid.
In this article you will learn: what the options are, the difference between an 11kW and a 22kW charger, what the installation costs, and what to check before you decide.
Why a home charger and not just a socket?
Every electric car comes with a portable cable that can be plugged into an ordinary 16A socket (3.7kW). But there are two problems:
- It is slow - a 60kWh battery takes 15-17 hours to charge from a socket
- It is unsafe over long periods - ordinary sockets and cables are not designed for a continuous 16A for hours on end; you risk overheating and fire
That is why a professional Wallbox (home charger) is a recommendation, not a luxury if you drive an EV regularly.
11kW vs 22kW - which one?
11kW charger (16A three-phase)
- Time to charge a 60kWh battery: ~5-6 hours
- Enough for most home users (overnight)
- Standard connection: CEE 16A or hard-wired
- Price of the charger: 25.000-60.000 MKD
- No upgrade to the main board needed (usually)
22kW charger (32A three-phase)
- Time to charge a 60kWh battery: ~3 hours
- For drivers who cover a lot of miles or have more than one vehicle
- Standard connection: CEE 32A or hard-wired
- Price of the charger: 45.000-90.000 MKD
- Often requires an upgrade of the main board to 63A or 80A
Careful
Many cars cannot accept more than 11kW AC. The Tesla Model 3/Y, most BYD models and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 all take a maximum of 11kW in AC mode. Buying a 22kW charger for a car like that means paying more for no benefit. Check your car's manual first!

What should be checked before installation?
1. The capacity of the main board
An 11kW charger draws 16A on all three phases. If your board is 3×25A (typical for a flat), adding a charger can be a problem when the water heater, the hob and the air conditioning are all running at once. For a house with 3×35A or 3×40A there is usually no issue. For heavier loads you may need an upgrade of the main board.
2. The distance from the board to the charger
The more metres of cable, the more material and labour. Standard 5×6mm² cable (for 11kW) or 5×10mm² (for 22kW) costs money per metre. Ideally keep it under 10 metres.
3. The condition of the wiring
A charger in an old 1970s house with no modern board and no earthing? The wiring needs remediation first. That is not a luxury - without proper earthing and an RCD, the risk of fire or electric shock rises dramatically.
4. Type of RCD - it must be Type B!
Ordinary RCDs (Type A or AC) do not work correctly with EV chargers. EVs generate DC components that a Type A device cannot detect. Type B is more expensive (5.000-15.000 MKD) but mandatory under the standard.
Extra features worth asking for
- Dynamic load balancing - the charger automatically reduces its power when other appliances are running
- Wi-Fi/4G control - schedule charging from an app
- Solar integration - if you have solar panels, the charger can charge “on sunshine only”
- MID meter for individual metering - useful in buildings with several users
- RFID/PIN protection - so a stranger cannot plug in
What about parking in an apartment building?
If you live in a flat with an underground garage, the situation is more complicated. You will need:
- Permission from the residents' association
- An individual meter (so you only pay for your own consumption)
- Possibly separate approval from EVN for an additional supply
