Domestic wiring is one of the most common causes of house fires in North Macedonia. According to the statistics, over 30% of house fires are linked to faults in the electrical installation. A large share of these fires can be avoided - provided you know which signs to spot in time.
In this article we will show you 10 clear signs that your wiring is dangerous and that you need an urgent call-out from a licensed electrician.

If you notice any of these signs, switch off the main fuse immediately and call an electrician. Do not wait - electrical faults get worse quickly and can cause a fire.
1. Frequent sparking from sockets or switches
When you plug an appliance into a socket and see a small spark, that is normal. But if the sparks are larger, frequent, or continue after the appliance is plugged in, that is a serious sign of a poor contact, damaged cables or an overloaded circuit. It is especially dangerous if the socket makes a crackling sound under load.
2. A burning smell from the installation
If you smell burning plastic, rubber or wire in the house, particularly around sockets, switches or the board, that is an emergency. The smell means something in the installation is overheating and melting the insulation.
3. Warm or hot sockets and switches
Feel the socket with your hand (without touching the metal parts!). If it is warm or hot, even when nothing is plugged in, that means the circuit is overloaded or there is a poor contact. A hot socket can start a fire inside the wall.
4. Fuses or the RCD tripping often
Fuses are there to protect you - but when they trip every day or several times a day, it means the installation is carrying a load beyond its capacity, or there is a fault. Never replace a fuse with a larger one than the design calls for - that removes the protection while the fault stays exactly where it was.
5. Lights that flicker or flash
If the bulbs in one or more rooms periodically flicker, dim or switch themselves on and off, that is a sign of a poor contact in the board or in the circuit. It happens often in buildings with old aluminium wiring.
6. An old board with ceramic (rewireable) fuses
If your board has old ceramic fuses with a wire that melts, that is 1960s technology. Modern homes should have circuit breakers + RCD protection, which react quickly and safely. Old fuses often fail to react fast enough when there is a fault, and they do not protect against electric shock.
What does an old board look like?
An old board has round ceramic fuses (white or grey) with a cap that screws out. A modern board has rectangular circuit breakers with a switch (up/down).
7. Aluminium conductors in the installation
Older buildings in Skopje (particularly the 1970s blocks in Karpos, Aerodrom and Butel) often have aluminium conductors. Over time aluminium oxidises, expands and contracts with temperature, and creates poor contacts. This is a frequent cause of fires in older buildings. We recommend replacing it gradually with copper.
8. A tangle of cables and extension leads
If you have several extension leads plugged into one another (a “gypsy chain”), or one extension lead loaded with several high-power appliances (hob, iron, hairdryer, water heater), that is a serious risk. The extension lead's cable is not built for that kind of load. The solution: more fixed sockets in the wall.
9. No earthing in the sockets
Modern homes should have three-pin sockets with earthing (the third pin). If you have old two-pin sockets with no earth, or if the new sockets have no earth wire connected, then every one of your appliances (water heater, washing machine, oven) is a potential source of electric shock.
10. Visibly damaged cables or insulation
If you see cables with cracked, dried-out or torn insulation, or if bare metal wires are visible, they need replacing urgently. Cables in cellars, lofts and utility rooms are often neglected, but they are dangerous.
What should I do if I notice one of these signs?
- Do not panic - but do not ignore the sign either
- Do not make a “temporary” repair yourself - it can make the problem worse
- Call a licensed electrician straight away for fault diagnosis and repair
- If there is a burning smell - switch off the main fuse
- For emergencies (sparks, smoke, overheating) - call immediately
